Pinot Noir is arguably the most revered grape variety in the world with origins in Burgundy, France where the best expressions can still be found. Pinot Noir is not only a tough grape to grow, it also shows miniscule differences in terroir arguably more than any other grape variety. Stylistically, it is generally higher in acid and lower in tannin but can vary depending on the location, and winemaking technique. It is very versatile with food, and shows a range of flavor from red and black fruit, floral, spice, earth, and mineral qualities.

Marquis d'Angerville

Volnay, burgundy

Domaine Marquis d’Angerville is rightly considered one of the best producers of Volnay in Burgundy, especially the monopole Clos de Ducs, which yields some of the most structured wines in the portfolio due to its high-altitude exposure.

Jacques d”Angerville ran the estate from 1952 to when he passed away in 2003. His belief was that great wine is “made in the vineyard.” D’Angerville’s various crus speak to that truism—they are sourced from low-yielding vines that offer individual characters representing the variable terrain and soil makeup of each vineyard.

D’Angerville is now run by his son Guillaume, who assumed his role after his father passed, and ostensibly nothing has changed. The wines continue to impress with their dark fruit, spice, minerality, and tactile structure.
