Barbera is actually one of the world’s most planted grape varieties, but excels in quality in cool climates with the best expressions generally found in Piedmont, Italy. The wines are dry with elevated acidity and forward fruit with less tannin than its Piedmontese neighbor Nebbiolo, which often overshadows it.

Roberto Voerzio

Piedmont, italy

Roberto Voerzio should be considered among the best producers in Piedmont with an unmistakably personal style that combines nature and nurture to yield intense, layered wines.

Voerzio farms 50 acres of vines organically with exhaustive work in the vineyard including a rigorous green harvest which keeps yields at one pound per plant, unheard of in Piedmont. All grapes are hand-harvested, vinified in temperature-controlled tanks, and then aged in a combination of large botti and barrique.

Voerzio will not release wines if they do not meet his high standards. The wines are remarkably consistent, combining structure, complexity, and refinement. They do require some patience to show their ultimate potential.
