Sangiovese is grown throughout Central Italy, but is most famous for Brunello Di Montalcino and Chianti Classico in Tuscany. While historically the quality of Sangiovese wines was variable, the best wines are influenced by terroir and low yields. At its best, it makes some of some of Italy’s best wines. It performs particularly well on limestone soils at higher altitudes yielding elegant age-worthy Tone & Backbone wines with a complex combination of red fruit, earth, and minerals.

Stella di Campalto

Montalcino

Stella di Campalto is a pioneer of sorts in Brunello. She is Sicilian, one of a handful of female winemakers, and one of the first biodynamic wineries in Brunello to Montalcino. Given she has only five hectares of this beautiful wine under vine, Signora Campalto has also become a bit of a cult favorite.

The Campalto family bought the abandoned Podere di Giuseppe estate in 1992 and started organic farming in 1996 before focusing on biodynamics. The winery reflects the same delicate handling as the vineyard—wild yeast fermentation, gravity flow, and hand bottling of the wines.

Whether it is Brunello Di Montalcino or the Rosso, Stella’s wines have a seductive aromatic profile and an elegant character achieved through unique terroir and the blending of wines from a combination of both barrique and large bottle.
