Why this wine made the cut…
Opulent, yet nicely balanced.

Chardonnay may be the most versatile white wine grape, often seen as a blank canvas. It displays various flavors and aromas depending on where it is grown and more specifically, how it is made. It can range in Palate Character from Bright & Crisp to Rich & Full depending on the climate. It is also particularly malleable and highly affected by winemaking choices like as malolactic fermentation, lees stirring, barrel fermentation and ageing practices.

Walter Hansel

Russian river valley

Stephen Hansel was tutored by Tom Rochioli when making his first wines in the family barn. He transformed a working farm led by his father, Walter Hansel, into an estate winery with 80 acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Despite the size of the estate, the estate harvests by hand, making 18 passes through the vineyard during the growing season and adjusting as they go based on the vicissitudes of Mother Nature, who helps to dictate their style of wine, perennially of high quality.

The cool fog in the evenings and the warm days of the Russian River Valley allow for a long ripening season and grapes of intense flavor and good acidity.
