Pinot Noir is arguably the most revered grape variety in the world with origins in Burgundy, France where the best expressions can still be found. Pinot Noir is not only a tough grape to grow, it also shows miniscule differences in terroir arguably more than any other grape variety. Stylistically, it is generally higher in acid and lower in tannin but can vary depending on the location, and winemaking technique. It is very versatile with food, and shows a range of flavor from red and black fruit, floral, spice, earth, and mineral qualities.

Chartogne-Taillet

Merfy, Champagne, France

Located in Merfy, seven kilometers north of Reims in the Montagne de Reims, Chartogne Taillet is the only grower/producer in the village and one of the most sought-after Champagne producers given the quality and small production of its 6,700 cases.

Prior to making his own wine, Alexandre Chartogne worked with Anselm Selosse. He experimented early on before establishing his unique approach. He farms organically—never using herbicides or pesticides—and uses a horse to work the vineyard. His wines are picked in separate distinct plots and vinified using native yeasts, which is an uncommon practice in Champagne.

Alexandre’s wines are vinified in oak and stainless steel. His focus on terroir creates small amounts of site-specific Champagnes that vary in style but all of which balance richness and vibrancy with complex persistent flavors.
