Cabernet Sauvignon origins are from the Gironde in southwest France, but is now planted across the world in climates that accommodate this late ripening grape. It is the dominant grape in wines made in Bordeaux’s Médoc and Graves regions. This small, thick-skinned grape, produces darkly colored wine, high in tannin and relatively high in acidity with hallmark aromas of blackcurrant and can stylistically change from austere in its youth to lush depending on the region, and winemaking style.

Dunn Vineyards

Howell Mountain, california

In 1978 Randy and Lori Dunn purchased a 14-acre plot in the Howell Mountains of Napa Valley, including five acres of cabernet vines. At the time Randy was working as Caymus Vineyards’ full-time oenologist, forcing him to tend his vines during evenings and weekends until he was able to fully dedicate himself to his estate.

By the end of the Eighties, Dunn had developed a dedicated following, appreciated for his unapologetically powerful wines made from vines grown 1400 feet above sea level that yielded intense, low-yielding fruit. Now, at 42 hectares, the estate is truly a family affair, with Randy’s son Mike and daughter Kristina working alongside their father.

Dunn Howell Mountain wines are powerful, tannic wines that often require patience to be ready to drink. However with time, these wines display layers of dark fruit, minerality, herbs, and smoke, a style indicative of the terroir and distinctly “Dunn.”
