Nebbiolo
100% Neb-BYO-lo
Nebbiolo is not only Piedmont’s, but also one of Italy’s most esteemed grape varietals, producing Tone & Backbone expressive, age-worthy wines. Nebbiolo is planted on south facing hillsides with the best wines planted on calcareous marl soil to the north and south of Alba in Barbaresco and Barolo. Nebbiolo tends to be pale in color, with brick notes with age that appear earlier than most other red wine varieties. In its youth, it has crisp acidity and high tannin, and with time displays ethereal perfumed aromas of including, cherries, tar, smoke, licorice, roses, and violets.

Elvio Cogno

Barolo, Piedmont

The Elvio Cogno vineyards sit along the Bricco Ravera, a hill in Novello in the Langhe area of Piedmont. The 11 hectares of vineyards are managed by Valter Fissore and Nadia Cogno with a philosophy of respect for the terroir’s ability to express the essence of nebbiolo.

To that end, the low-yielding vineyards are densely planted and organically farmed on limestone soils up to 300 meters in elevation. The climate is influenced by the Alps to the north and the Ligurian sea to the south, helping to create fog (or "Nebbia” in Italian). The large diurnal temperature changes result in grapes with good acidity and phenolic structure.

Valter and Nadia are focused on letting the grapes speak for themselves and therefore practice minimal intervention in the winery, including the use of native yeasts and aging in large used-oak casks before bottling in the traditional "Albeisa” shaped bottle that is unique to this area.
