Rosso di Montalcino
Salvioni
Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy
Salvioni has only been making Brunello since 1985, but has since then established itself as one of the top, most sought out producers in Montalcino. The 20 hectare estate, only 4 of which are dedicated to wines, makes only10,000 bottles of Brunello a year.
The estate in southeast Montalcino looks over the Val D’Orcia from its perch, 420 meters above sea level. There are three small vineyards, each with its own terroir, soils that vary from chalky schist to stony marl, along with subtle differences of micro-climate influencing the ripening of the grapes.
All the work in the vineyard is carried out by hand, with hard pruning to obtain low yields of fruit and careful selection during the manual harvest. The wines are traditionally aged in large 20 HL Slavonian oak casks for at least 36 months. Great fruit, and a deft touch in the winery yields wines of structure, complexity, and ageability.
