Pinot Noir is arguably the most revered grape variety in the world with origins in Burgundy, France where the best expressions can still be found. Pinot Noir is not only a tough grape to grow, it also shows miniscule differences in terroir arguably more than any other grape variety. Stylistically, it is generally higher in acid and lower in tannin but can vary depending on the location, and winemaking technique. It is very versatile with food, and shows a range of flavor from red and black fruit, floral, spice, earth, and mineral qualities.

Joseph & Philippe Roty

Gevrey-Chambertin, burgundy

The Roty family has a very long history of winemaking in Gevrey-Chambertin. Joseph Roty took over from his paternal grandfather in 1968. Before his passing in 2008, this venerable winemaker was responsible for the distinct character of these wines, a style that has been carried forward by his progeny.

Some of the vines in the Joseph Roty domaine date back to 1881, some of the oldest in the Côte-d'Or. The vineyards are concentrated around Charmes-Chambertin and Marsannay. The Roty family do not use any chemical pesticides or fertilizers but practice strict pruning and eliminate surface roots to encourage the vines to grow deep to rock and chalk below the soil.

Joseph Roty only hand-picks and destems all grapes, uses native yeasts, and practices a cold soak with periodic punch-downs to yield powerful wines with incredible depth of flavor and aromas that develop especially with age.
