GRAPE VARIETAL(S)
Syrah
100% See-RA
Syrah is widely planted throughout the world, but that was not so until the late twentieth century when Syrah was principally grown in the Rhone Valley and, as Shiraz, in Australia. Stylistically, the Palate Character of Syrah can vary depending on ripeness from a rich Round & Fleshy, Tone & Backbone, to a Powerful & Extracted. The flavors and aromas can also vary with a dark, sometimes sweet, fruit character, varying amount of spice, floral, and earth, and smoke, and meaty aromas and flavors.

Joey Tensley

Santa Barbara County, California

Joey Tensley’s first experience with wine occurred at the young age of 12. His soccer team was taking part in a tournament in France and were given a tour of a neighboring winery. Joey recalls the chilly cellars and the aromas of wine, and he knew then that he wanted to become a winemaker.

Joey Tensley worked at several different wineries, including Beckmen, until 1998 when he made his first 100 cases of wine with the goal of making well-priced syrah from Santa Barbara County. He is one of the early winemakers to take advantage of the myriad of microclimates and soils afforded by the Santa Barbara mountain range.

Joey Tensely now makes 3500 cases of several different varieties, but his syrahs stand out at every price range for their energy and depth of fruit, complimented by complex floral and spice notes.
