Why this wine made the cut…
The trifecta: pretty, complex, and a value
Santa Cruz Mountains, California
GRAPE VARIETAL(S)
Chardonnay
100% Shar-do-NAY
Chardonnay may be the most versatile white wine grape, often seen as a blank canvas. It displays various flavors and aromas depending on where it is grown and more specifically, how it is made. It can range in Palate Character from Bright & Crisp to Rich & Full depending on the climate. It is also particularly malleable and highly affected by winemaking choices like as malolactic fermentation, lees stirring, barrel fermentation and ageing practices.

Mount Eden

Santa Cruz Mountains, California

Mount Eden is a small historic estate located at a 2000-foot peak in the Santa Cruz Mountains 15 miles from the Pacific ocean. Winemaker and proprietor Jeffrey Patterson has been making these boutique wines since 1981.

Mount Eden sustainably farms cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, and chardonnay on 40 acres of dry-farmed shale soils on exposed mountain hillsides. In 2007 they purchased the neighboring Cinnabar vineyard, which consists mostly of pinot noir and chardonnay, and renamed it Domaine Eden.

Despite their proximity, owing to very different soils, the wines of Domaine Eden showcase more expansive mid-palate fruit than the more mineral-driven wines of the shale soils of Mount Eden.
